The 2018 Rhode Island Geography Bee\u00a0was held in Cranston, Rhode Island, on April 6, 2018.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n

Know your geography!<\/span><\/h2>\n

This year\u2019s Bee in our home state was, as always, a joyful get-together! \u00a0 Students from 51 Rhode Island schools, ranging from grades 4-8, were involved.\u00a0 Nine geo-talented students were returning for a second time!<\/p>\n

Well-prepared students and their parents were excited about the competition\u2013 a lot of individual and family preparation and study precedes this event! \u00a0Questions are never easy…. \u00a0Knowing about your state, your country, and the world is essential. \u00a0Many adults in the audience were stumped by questions that received correct replies by expert students!<\/p>\n

Denise M. Moretti-Foggo, a longtime Rhode Island educator, is the\u00a0Rhode Island Geography Bee Coordinator. \u00a0Denise cheerfully and efficiently coordinates all aspects of the event. \u00a0Denise arranges for the venue, the help of many volunteers, and just makes it fun for everyone. \u00a0There are gifts, and snacks and a nice lunch for everyone! \u00a0 She follows the guidelines set forth by National Geographic who help arrange for Bees in the 50 states. \u00a0Denise will also attend the \u00a0finals for the Geography Bee in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n

The Mayor of Cranston, Allan Fung, spoke to all the participants. \u00a0He was delighted that the event was again this year held in his city.<\/p>\n

Every student is a winner!<\/span><\/h2>\n

On both the school and state level, the competition is challenging! \u00a0Each student who attended was a winner from their school.\u00a0 \u00a0As coordinator Denise Moretti-Foggo explained the rules for the finals of the RI event, she said this:
\n\u201cI do want to commend the students who didn\u2019t make it to the finals,\u201d she told the crowd. \u201cI want you to know, that you are all winners already, simply by making it here. Congratulations on that accomplishment.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The winner of this year\u2019s final Rhode Island event was Maximus D. Terra. \u00a0He is an 8th grader at the Feinstein Middle School in Coventry.<\/p>\n

The runner-up was 6th grader Nate Gray from Moses Brown School in Providence.<\/p>\n

The state champion has been invited to attend the National Bee in Washington, D.C., \u00a0May 20-23, 2018. \u00a0We all wish Maximus Terra the very best!<\/p>\n
