Students love making sketch maps. \u00a0These easy and colorful maps are are a hands-on way of\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>reinforcing student skills in your classroom. \u00a0Kids love <\/strong>a chance to practice research, design, and pen and pencil skills.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In today’s tech-focused atmosphere, don’t let your students forget how to hold a pencil!<\/p>\n

What might be the best part of making a sketch map? \u00a0While working on their maps, students will be having fun and learning at the same time! \u00a0This post is all about making a sketch map of the state of\u00a0TEXAS<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

STEP 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Present a sketch map project of the state of TEXAS to your students<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

With a pencil and paper, make a simple outline of the state. \u00a0Draw lightly to start, using an eraser if necessary. \u00a0Make adjustments as you go!<\/p>\n

Every student’s map will look a little different– and that is great! \u00a0All students use their own skills to make an image of the state.<\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This next step is easy, but important. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Draw a border around the edge of the paper. \u00a0This will frame your map!<\/p>\n

Step 3<\/h2>\n

Here we will add a few easy geographic points!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Using a star, mark the state capital, AUSTIN.<\/p>\n

Label the large body of water that is adjacent to \u00a0Texas.<\/p>\n

We have added bordering state abbreviations.<\/p>\n

We also labeled the Rio Grande that forms a boundary with the country of \u00a0MEXICO<\/strong><\/a>, which is also labeled.<\/p>\n

Step 4<\/h2>\n

With a little research, you can continue to add other details of your choice as well!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We chose to add a lot of Texas cities. \u00a0You can add them as we did, or add other details of your own choice.<\/p>\n

And we added the name “Texas Panhandle” that is used to describe northern section of Texas.<\/p>\n

STEP 5<\/h2>\n

Here’s the best part: finishing your map with color and decoration!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This step includes adding a title, a compass rose, and any other decorative details of your choice. \u00a0It is fun to draw an armadillo, an animal found in Texas!<\/p>\n

Feel free to start these details with pencil first, adjusting with erasure, before you finish with a bolder pen or marker.<\/p>\n

Colored pencils, markers or crayons can be used to add color (we prefer colored pencils!).<\/p>\n

When you study TEXAS<\/strong><\/a> using our large 16 inch by 20 inch map, you will find this sketch map project to be a great additional activity that supports learning.<\/p>\n

Why not have students draw their sketch map on the back of this map, as part of your State studies! \u00a0Or draw it on the back of your USA map!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
