Earth Day has been celebrated worldwide every year since 1970. \u00a0Events are planned \u00a0to draw attention to issues important to a healthy environment. \u00a0Get your students involved with this year’s theme– \u00a0not just on April 22nd, but all month long!<\/p>\n

The special theme of Earth Day is recognizing plastic pollution. \u00a0More than 193 countries will host events, aided by the Earth Day Network.<\/p>\n

What is plastic pollution?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

When plastic products build up in the environment, this affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, and humans. \u00a0Often in a negative way! \u00a0 The reason there are so many plastics in our world is that plastic is both inexpensive and durable. \u00a0Plastic is easy to make, and strong. \u00a0However, plastic is slow to degrade and stays in the environment for a long time. \u00a0Everyday in our world, we can see that plastic makes up most of the litter that surrounds us.<\/p>\n

We can see that, sadly, this mute swan has made its nest with common plastic debris.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Plastic pollution can affect land, waterways and oceans. \u00a0Living organisms, particularly marine animals, can be harmed. \u00a0Sometimes they eat or get tangled in plastic waste. \u00a0Often exposure to plastics can affect their bodies. \u00a0Sometimes the human body can \u00a0also affected by plastic pollution. \u00a0 Learn more this year!<\/p>\n

How can you and your students learn more?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Earth Day Network offers many helpful resources that can help you describe the issues of this year’s Earth Day theme in the classroom. \u00a0 All these resources can inform as well as help get your students involved.<\/p>\n
