recognizing the influential women of our culture. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>It&#8217;s a fun activity to locate the homes, workplaces or monuments of our famous American women on a map.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Find out where they lived!<\/h2>\n<p>Often women&#8217;s landmarks are notable for individuals, as with an artist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/\">Georgia O&#8217;Keefe, whose museum is near where she lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico<\/a>. \u00a0Other spots represent groups of women, as with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lowe\/index.htm\">Lowell National Park<\/a> which, in great part, celebrates the women who worked in the textile mills of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some links that can help students learn more about the places connected with famous American women, individuals and groups:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/feature\/wom\/\">National Register of Historic Places<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwhm.org\/exhibits\/parading-progress\">National Women&#8217;s History Museum<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">MAPPING FAMOUS WOMEN!<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here are some fun mapping examples we came up with,\u00a0to celebrate women this month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We chose famous American women and found out where they made a difference, or where they lived. \u00a0Then we chose an image that represented them and placed it near their city on the map!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Clara Barton established the American Red Cross. \u00a0Today, the Clara Barton National Historic Site is at the site of Barton&#8217;s home, where she spent the last 15 years of her life. \u00a0<strong><em>It was the first National Historic Site dedicated to the accomplishments of a woman.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Park Service has restored her home in Silver Spring, Maryland. \u00a0Here, the site preserves the early history of the American Red Cross, since the home also served as an early headquarters of the organization.\u00a0Visitors can see how Barton lived and worked.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/clara-barton-MD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18759 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/clara-barton-MD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"532\" center;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, influential author<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896 \u2013 1953) lived and wrote in rural Florida. \u00a0Her best known work is the novel <strong>The Yearling<\/strong>, about a boy who adopts an orphaned fawn, also made into a film. \u00a0Rawlings won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.<\/p>\n<p>The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park is located near the village of Cross Creek in Florida, where Rawlings lived. \u00a0The park is about 8 acres and her home and workspace is preserved. \u00a0Here we have marked the town where Rawlings lived and worked, now a visitor attraction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rawlings-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rawlings--300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rawlings--300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rawlings--500x318.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rawlings-.jpg 708w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;Rosie the Riveter&#8221;, Symbol of Working Women in WWII<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>World War II provided opportunities for jobs for women, often in professions that were not open to them before the war. \u00a0Making planes was a huge area of opportunity for women: over 300,000 women worked in the U.S. aviation industry in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rosie the Riveter&#8221; was a symbol of the jobs that were available to women, and her image recruited women to work while their husbands were away fighting the war.<\/p>\n<p>Today there is a museum that documents the war efforts of women in Richmond California: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rori\/index.htm\">Rosie the Riveter Home Front, part of the National Park Service<\/a>. \u00a0We have marked it on our map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rosie-riveter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18762 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rosie-riveter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"628\" center;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Nampeyo, artist\/potter of the Hopi reservation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Nampeyo, a world famous potter, lived from 1859 to 1942 on the Hopi Reservation in northern Arizona. \u00a0Nampeyo&#8217;s work used ancient Hopi and Tewa techniques. Today it \u00a0is collected by many famous museums in the united States and Europe. \u00a0Her work set a world record \u00a0for Southwest American Indian pottery when a decorated ceramic pot, sold for $350,000.<\/p>\n<p>Here we have marked the Hopi Reservation where this famous American artist did her work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised-296x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised-300x304.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised-500x506.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/potter-AZ-revised.jpg 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">WOMEN ACROSS THE STATES<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A large blank\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/product-category\/usa-maps\/\">map of the USA<\/a>\u00a0is helpful locate notable women in each of the 50 states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Or, locate famous women in a state using individual state maps, like these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/product-category\/individual-us-state-maps\/\">large classroom activity maps.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Students can place a dot to mark the location of the city or town that&#8217;s associated with the woman they have chosen. \u00a0Then they make a drawing that depicts an aspect of the woman&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Note when geography, the location of the site, would have had an influence on the woman&#8217;s work. \u00a0This was surely true with our examples of author Rawlings and potter Nampeyo above.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6602 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/usa-maps-cat.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrate Women&#8217;s History this month in your class! \u00a0Combine geography with recognizing the influential women of our culture. \u00a0 It&#8217;s a fun activity to locate the homes, workplaces or monuments of our famous American women on a map.
