Sketch maps are a simple and wonderful way of <\/strong><\/span>reinforcing student skills in your classroom. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is first in a series of simple hand-drawn maps to use in your classroom. \u00a0In addition to adding geographic knowledge, they give students a chance to practice research, design, and pen and pencil skills.<\/p>\n

(In today’s tech-focused atmosphere, don’t let your students forget how to hold a pencil!)<\/p>\n

What might be the best part of sketch maps? \u00a0While working on their maps, students will be having fun and learning at the same time!<\/p>\n

STEP 1<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Our first sketch map will be of the state of Florida.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To start, find a map of the state of Florida to refer to.<\/p>\n

With a pencil and paper, make a simple outline of the state. \u00a0Draw lightly to start, using an eraser if necessary. \u00a0Make adjustments as you go!<\/p>\n

Every student’s map will look a little different!<\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This next step is easy, but important. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Draw a border around the edge of the paper. \u00a0This will frame your map!<\/p>\n

Step 3<\/h3>\n

Here we will add a few easy geographic points<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Using a star inside a circle, mark the state capital, Tallahassee.<\/p>\n

Label the large bodies of water that surround Florida.<\/p>\n

We have added bordering state abbreviations, and a large lake. \u00a0
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

STEP #4<\/h2>\n

With a little research, you can continue to add other details of your choice as well!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

You can add the places and details we did, or add others of your own choice.<\/p>\n

For instance, we added the Everglades, shown with a symbol.<\/p>\n

The river is drawn in blue, a color used to show water on maps.<\/p>\n

And we added the name “The Panhandle” that is used to describe western Florida.<\/p>\n

STEP 5<\/h3>\n

Here’s the best part: finishing your map with color and decoration!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This step includes adding a title, a compass rose, and any other decorative details of your choice.<\/p>\n

Feel free to start these details with pencil first, adjusting with erasure, before you finish with a bolder pen or marker.<\/p>\n

Colored pencils, markers or crayons can be used to add color (we prefer colored pencils!).<\/p>\n
