(Photo: Dan Prince\/USFWS)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pelican Island, our first national refuge<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt\u00a0designated Pelican Island to be the first official US wildlife refuge. \u00a0Pelican Island is located off the coast of Florida. \u00a0It is made up only 3 acres. \u00a0Today, 2.5 acres of water are part of the refuge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/640px-PelicanIslandNWR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18650 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/640px-PelicanIslandNWR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/640px-PelicanIslandNWR.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/640px-PelicanIslandNWR-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/640px-PelicanIslandNWR-500x336.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the early 20th century, egrets and other large birds made their home on this tiny island. \u00a0 The fashion of the day was to adorn hats with large feathers, and hunters were driving the birds of this island into extinction. \u00a0People interested in saving these vulnerable birds drew attention to the island and President Roosevelt responded. \u00a0 As a result, these birds of Pelican Island will always be protected.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Agency responsibility<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The National Wildlife System maintains the refuges and wetlands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitors plant and animals<\/li>\n<li>Restores wetland, forest, grassland, and marine habitats<\/li>\n<li>Controls spread of invasive species<\/li>\n<li>Reintroduces rare fish, wildlife and plants<\/li>\n<li>Monitors air quality<\/li>\n<li>Investigates and cleans contaminants<\/li>\n<li>Prevents and controls disease<\/li>\n<li>Assesses water quality and quantity<\/li>\n<li>Understands the relationship between people and wildlife<\/li>\n<li>Manages habitats&#8211; water levels, prescribed burning, haying, grazing, timber harvest, and planting vegetation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a result, we benefit from having these lands well cared for. \u00a0We have these special areas to experience nature up close. \u00a0As a result, we can feel good, knowing that wildlife is protected.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">A few refuges in the system!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to the efforts of the National Wildlife System, the public can experience wilderness settings. \u00a0Fishing, hiking and photography are \u00a0activities individuals and families enjoy in these areas. \u00a0See the Wildlife Refuge site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuges\/\">HERE<\/a>\u00a0: \u00a0locate refuges in your state and area, with\u00a0special events!
