So many countries are participating in the Winter Olympics!<\/p>\n

Here are some simple activities to stimulate your class to think about geography, inspired by the Olympic event!<\/p>\n

SIMPLE QUESTIONS– that might need geography research!<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Who is the host country for the Winter Olympics? \u00a0What continent is this country located in?<\/li>\n
  2. Which participating countries are located CLOSEST to the host country?<\/li>\n
  3. Which countries participating in the Winter Olympics do not have a cold weather winter climate? \u00a0Where are they located on the globe, in what continents or areas?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Have your students mark the countries participating on a WORLD MAP<\/a>!<\/p>\n

    FLAGS!<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

    Each country parades its flag in the opening ceremony. \u00a0When athletes win, their flags are prominently displayed. \u00a0 They provide a colorful spectacle in the Olympic event!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Ask students to research how many country flags will display in the opening ceremony!<\/li>\n
    2. Have students work in groups by continents. \u00a0Make flags for all the countries within the continent that will be at the Olympics!<\/li>\n
    3. Think of a fun way to make a special USA flag to celebrate our involvement! \u00a0\u00a0Here is a link about making flags for kids– here<\/a>!<\/li>\n
    4. Use paper plates to make country flags, like this activity– here<\/a>! \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Pyeongchang’s freezing temperatures will be a challenge for athletes.<\/p>\n

      U.S. athletes will have an advantage with an opening ceremony uniform with a built-in heating unit!<\/p>\n

      Designer Ralph Lauren designed all the clothing for the athletes for the Winter events.<\/p>\n

      In each jacket, adjustable heaters are made from heat-conducting\u00a0inks printed in the shape of an American flag.The flags, inside the jackets, are \u00a0connected to a battery pack, which\u00a0will keep\u00a0Team USA members warm for \u00a011 hours!<\/p>\n
