Chinese New Year \u00a0is celebrated not only in China, but in many cities across the globe. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chinese New Year starts on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar.<\/p>\n

The holiday is tied to the moon phase. \u00a0The Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. \u00a0Usually the celebration will start from the New Year’s Eve and will last for around 15 days.<\/p>\n

Here at Map of the Month\/Maps for the Classroom<\/a>, we love going to Boston’s Chinatown for the Chinese New Year. \u00a0We never tire of the \u00a0costumed parades, the food and the colorful festivities!<\/p>\n

Many Chinatown areas erect stages for holiday shows. \u00a0All kinds of interesting demonstrations are presented, from olorful costumed dances to martial arts presentations. \u00a0Here the\u00a0Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne, Australia, presents an athletic dance featuring Chinese dragon puppets!<\/p>\n

Crowds of people swarm San Francisco’s Chinatown for the holiday! \u00a0Dim sum is a favorite Chinese finger food, and banners advertise the treats. \u00a0There is a a lot of competition to attract customers!<\/p>\n

In Richmond, British Columbia, in Canada, we see a glimpse of who is underneath this big complicated costume of a Chinese dragon! \u00a0Wearing one of these costumes is hard work.<\/p>\n

Often displays are very ornate and complicated! \u00a0They are designed to delight \u00a0families who get together to celebrate. \u00a0To honor ancestors, family and friends is at the root of this colorful holiday.<\/p>\n

Chinese New Year Food Treats!<\/h2>\n

A restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan, offers delectable steaming dim sum.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this holiday is the ancient Chinese desire to connect with family and friends. \u00a0Everyone cleans their house and and hopes for luck in the new year. \u00a0Gifts are given– often money in colorfully decorated envelopes.<\/p>\n

The celebration will often include a religious ceremony given in honor of heaven, earth, family ancestors and other traditional Chinese gods. \u00a0Here is the “Temple of Wind” in Taiwan. \u00a0there are also fireworks in the same city of Tainan, Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Chinese new year in your classroom!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Use maps of China<\/a>, \u00a0Asia<\/a> and the World<\/a> to make your students familiar with this large country, and its place in the continent.<\/p>\n

Locate some of the large cities of the world where the Chinese New Year is celebrated.<\/p>\n

Have your students research to find out how the Chinese lunar calendar<\/a> differs from the Christian calendar.<\/p>\n

Have fun with Chinese zodiac symbols<\/a>! \u00a0We will be in the year of the Dog for 2018– what does that mean? \u00a0 Here is an example of\u00a0Chinese paper-cutting, celebrating year of the dog. \u00a0Try this craft with your students!<\/p>\n
