{"id":16359,"date":"2016-06-21T11:59:13","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T15:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/?p=16359"},"modified":"2016-06-21T12:01:43","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T16:01:43","slug":"atoll-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/atoll-wildlife\/","title":{"rendered":"Exceptional Atoll"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>An ATOLL is a very unique geographic \u00a0feature. \u00a0It looks like an island with a large central water-filled area. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>It is a ring-shaped reef, island, or chain of islands formed of coral.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An atoll is often formed from a volcano that is submerged in the water. \u00a0 These old volcanos are extinct, and are often worn down and filled in to form a bowl-like depression. \u00a0The upper ring-like surface of them is covered in coral. \u00a0This is a photo of the\u00a0Addu Atoll, in the Maldives, seen from space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ISS011-E-8500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16381 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ISS011-E-8500.jpg\" alt=\"ISS011-E-8500\" width=\"333\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ISS011-E-8500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ISS011-E-8500-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ISS011-E-8500-100x79.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ISS011-E-8500-150x119.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes an atoll looks like a ring, and others appear to be\u00a0a broken ring. \u00a0 The volcanic crater rises a little above water or is not very deep. \u00a0Coral grows along the crater of the volcano and this forms a reef. \u00a0 This coral reef that surrounds this water-filled lagoon.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Vocabulary word! \u00a0<span class=\"s1\">A LAGOON<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water by coral reefs or barrier islands.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">IN THE TROPICS<\/h3>\n<p>Atolls are only found in the tropics and subtropics waters. \u00a0Why? \u00a0The kinds of coral that build reef like structures can grown only in warm tropical and subtropical waters.<\/p>\n<p>The shape is often circle or ring-like, but atolls form in different shapes too, like the one shown below, the atoll named Atafu, part of the country of Tokelau.Tokelau is an island country and also a territory of New Zealand. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Tokelau consists of three tropical coral atolls named Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. There is also a small Swains Island which is governed as part of American Samoa. \u00a0Together, these small pieces of coral and land only measure a total of 4\u00a0sq\u00a0miles.
