<strong>ISLAND<\/strong>\u00a0is.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Can you and your students come up with other terms that relate to ISLANDS?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>DESERT ISLAND<\/strong>\u00a0 An island not inhabited by humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>ATOLL<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A coral reef shaped like a circle or ring and is filled with water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is usually the tip of an extinct volcano.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>COASTLINE<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The land along the outer edge of an island, where the land meets the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>ARCHIPELAGO<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A chain or group of islands<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>BARRIER ISLAND<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">An island formed of dunes, made of flat or lumpy areas of sand parallel to a coastline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>PENINSULA<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides but connected to mainland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>GULF<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A large bay that is connected to the ocean or larger body of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>BAY<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A large indentation on a coastline that is connected to an ocean or lake <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>LAGOON<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water by coral reefs or barrier islands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>BEACH<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Land along the coast of an ocean, sea, lake, or river consisting of loose particles made of sand or rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">ALL ISLANDS HAVE INTERESTING FEATURES!<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"s1\"><b>ALEUTIAN ISLANDS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Aleutians are a long chain of volcanic islands, stretching for 1,200 miles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Aleutians divide the northern Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are 14 larger islands and 57 small ones. There are also 57 volcanoes!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are part of the state of Alaska, and the western islands in the chain stretch towards the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Scientists have a theory that the Aleutians were once formed a <b>land bridge<\/b>, and were not divided by water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This might have allowed ancient people from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/products\/asia-map\/\">ASIA<\/a> <\/strong>to walk across to the continent <\/span><span class=\"s1\">of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/products\/north-america-map\/\">NORTH AMERICA.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There are only about 8,200 people in all the islands.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are called the Aleuts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the Aleutians, a small city called Unalaska holds more than half that number of people in all the islands combined!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">WHERE EXACTLY ARE THE ALEUTIANS?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16139 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above.png\" alt=\"aleutians above\" width=\"622\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above.png 622w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above-300x287.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above-500x478.png 500w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above-100x96.png 100w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aleutians-above-150x143.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The RED DOT makes it clear exactly where the Aleutian Islands are located.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Students\u00a0could r<\/span>esearch on a more detailed map (maybe in an atlas?) to find the longitude and latitude lines that form the area where most of the Aleutian Islands are located.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">MORE ABOUT ISLANDS!<\/h3>\n<p>Help your students learn more about ISLANDS\u00a0and their unique characteristics!<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/cartocraze-2\/\">CartoCraze!
