Mississippi River Boats<\/h1>\n

Before the advent of the railroad, the Mississippi river boats were necessary for transportation of people and goods along the great river. \u00a0These boats were a huge part of the history of early America and the study of our country\u2019s geography. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Mississippi<\/a><\/p>\n

The Mississippi River is the second longest river in North America by length and measures roughly 2,300 miles in length.\u00a0 The headwaters are at Lake Itaska in north central Minnesota.\u00a0 This major river of North America passes by or through ten different states as it flows to the south.\u00a0 It empties into the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

Steamboats were designed for inland use on rivers, and in the 19th and into the early 20th century many went both upstream and downstream on the Mississippi.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

People rode the boats to get to places along the river.\u00a0 <\/span>Material goods were shipped as well.\u00a0 <\/span>When trains started to be established, these river boats became less important.\u00a0 <\/span>Trains went in many directions that the river boats did not go!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This old photo from 1906 shows two steamboats in Memphis, Tennessee.\u00a0 <\/span>You can see that there was no formal dock in place. Boats were able to pull into shallow water and ramps were put in place for loading and unloading of people and goods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Boats that were designed for passengers often had fancier interiors than those that just moved cargo from place to place. \u00a0This painting of the steamboat \u201cPrincess\u201d was made in 1861, at the height of riverboat use on the Mississippi.<\/p>\n

The Mississippi Watershed has many rivers flowing into the mighty Mississippi! \u00a0Each of these rivers had an interesting histories with steamboats too, like the USS Naiad that worked the Missouri River\u00a0in the 1860s.<\/p>\n
