class=\"s1\">The Galapagos Islands are above and below the Equator in the Pacific. \u00a0They are part of both Northern and Southern Hemispheres.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These islands are part of the country of Ecuador\u00a0and are 600 miles from the coast. \u00a0They are considered to be in the continent of SOUTH AMERICA.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The GALAPAGOS are an archipelago of volcanic peaks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some islands are large, like Isabela, some small as rocks. \u00a0Because these volcanoes are still erupting, small islands are still being formed!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\">UNIQUE TO THE GALAPAGO ISLANDS<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Much of their flora and fauna of the Galapagos are unique, found nowhere else on earth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The scientist Charles Darwin traveled there in his boat The Beagle in 1835.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He studied many species and developed his famous theories of evolution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are marine iguanas, sea turtles, many kinds of amazing tropical birds, sea lions, whales and dolphins, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">to name a few!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Many native animals were lost when the Europeans introduced other more aggressive animals.<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Whalers drove a species of large tortoise extinct when they captured them for food and their precious oil.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Fur-seals were driven almost to extinction by traders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Today the Galapagos is protected: scientists are working to restore the numbers of small colonies of creatures, and to maintain the ones that are still active and numerous!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\">RESEARCHING GALAPAGOS ANIMALS<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">Students love to learn about unusual animals, so researching about creatures, and even plants, from the Galapagos is a great starting
