Students learn the basics of\u00a0continents first. \u00a0This prepares them to move on to individual continents!<\/p>\n

A blank map that shows all the the continents is very helpful.<\/p>\n

\"CONTINENTS<\/a><\/p>\n

This large map– 16″ X 20″<\/strong> <\/a>— shows the outlines of all the continents, with Antarctica shown separately in an inset. \u00a0Students label continents first. \u00a0This is easy to do. \u00a0At the same time they can see the location of the continents to each other. \u00a0This map, found HERE<\/a>, was designed with grades 1-6 in mind, but higher grades have found this map useful as well.<\/p>\n

LARGER CONTINENT DETAILS<\/h2>\n

Next they move on to label the major bodies of water, which are the major oceans and seas. \u00a0At the same time, students can shade in blue around the continents to show the coastlines of the areas of land.<\/p>\n

\"CONTINENTS<\/a><\/p>\n

Students can draw in a major river on each continent. \u00a0Then they\u00a0understand that a river a different kind of body of water than an ocean.<\/p>\n

Drawing in the major mountain ranges, like the Rockies, on each continent is easy. \u00a0Students begin to see that continents have\u00a0topography that varies from one area to another. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

For example, now it is easy to see that the Andes run along the wester side of the continent of South America. \u00a0They can also see that the Amazon River is central and east in the northern part of the South American continent.<\/p>\n

They can see the Mississippi River (see our FREE file about this famous river HERE<\/a>!<\/strong>) runs from north to south in North America, with its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

OTHER IMPORTANT LINES<\/h2>\n

\"CONTINENTS<\/a><\/p>\n

When introducing lines of latitude and longitude, why not start with the easiest ones to remember? \u00a0Learning and drawing in some\u00a0simple lines gives them a reference point for learning more about\u00a0latitude and longitude lines later.<\/p>\n

They can see that the PRIME MERIDIAN runs through the continents of Europe and Africa.<\/p>\n

Drawing in the EQUATOR allows them to see the areas on earth that have the warmest temperatures. \u00a0This is a useful introduction to the concept of CLIMATE.<\/strong><\/p>\n

By drawing in the lines for the TROPIC OF CANCER and the TROPIC OF CAPRICORN, students become aware of the term HEMISPHERE for the first time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

SIMPLE — BUT A LOT IS LEARNED!<\/h2>\n

Allow your students to learn — as well as prepare!– when\u00a0using a hands-on map like this CONTINENTS map<\/a><\/strong> that is simple yet detailed.<\/h3>\n

First, they get a strong overview of the major landforms and bodies of water that make up their planet EARTH.<\/p>\n

Then they add in some details about topography — like mountains and rivers– plus geographic terms, like CLIMATE and HEMISPHERE.<\/p>\n

They are now ready to move on to study the individual continents<\/a><\/strong> with useful\u00a0preparation.<\/h3>\n

Here is an example of the\u00a0completed map of AFRICA<\/a>, studied as a single continent. \u00a0With preparation, students already know where AFRICA is in terms of the oceans and other continents, as well as knowing that the ATLAS MOUNTAINS and the NILE RIVER are in the north!<\/p>\n
