The British Isles are made up of over 6,000 islands , all part of the continent of EUROPE<\/a><\/b>!\u00a0 <\/span>Here are some facts to help avoid confusion!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/a><\/p>\n

LOTS OF NAMES for All the Islands<\/h2>\n

United Kingdom<\/b> and Republic of Ireland<\/b> are two separate Sovereign States or countries. <\/span><\/p>\n

United Kingdom<\/b> is England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland (not separate countries).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Republic of Ireland<\/b> takes up the larger southern part of the island known as IRELAND<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The island comprised of Scotland, Wales and England <\/span>is called GREAT BRITAIN<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would be hard to count the names of all the bodies of water around, in and between the islands. Most famous are the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the English Channel. \u00a0The English Channel is the body of water that is between the continent of EUROPE and these famous British Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Linking England to the European continent!<\/h2>\n

The Channel Tunnel, also known as the \u201cChunnel\u201d connects England and Europe<\/a><\/strong>: it allows trains to go under the water to France.\u00a0 <\/span>Although the idea was thought of as early as 1802, the construction for the tunnel did not start until 1988.\u00a0<\/span>It did not open until 1994 when completed.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the English Terminal of Folkestone, a giant horse has been carved into the land of a hillside as an image that can been seen from the station! \u00a0Read more about it HERE<\/a>! \u00a0This is a kind of public art that can be enjoyed by all, and reminds us of old cave carvings and paintings.<\/p>\n

Red Squirrel of the British Isles<\/span><\/h2>\n

Unlike the grey squirrels we are familiar with in America, the Red Squirrel is found exclusively in Europe and Asia. Their reddish coats and furry ear tufts make their appearance unique.<\/span><\/p>\n

These squirrels are found primarily in <\/span>forests and woodlands and dine on seeds fungi, berries and nuts.\u00a0 <\/span>After gathering their food, excess is often stored away in caches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, unlike the grey counterpart, <\/span>the memory of the Red Squirrel is not so reliable and <\/span>often some caches are never recovered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These squirrels don\u2019t scurry along just land: <\/span>they are also able to swim!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Study Europe– the British Isles included!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When your students study CONTINENTS<\/a><\/strong>, especially the continent of EUROPE<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(see our hands-on map below), encourage them to learn\u00a0the names of the countries. \u00a0Have them research some interesting landmarks in each that are related to geography (like the White Horse at the Chunnel station in Folkstone!) \u00a0Encourage them to write about an animal that can be found, one that might be unique to a country or its geographic region! \u00a0All of our maps are large– desktop size for easy labeling and fun coloring.<\/p>\n
