The source of the river lies in British Columbia in Canada. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">When students work on our <a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/products\/alaska-map\/\">hands-on Yukon!<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Yukon River is known to be one of the longest salmon runs on earth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Salmon live most of their lives in the ocean then migrate over a thousand miles back to clean fresh spawning areas in the river to lay eggs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The fish depend on unpolluted waters for their survival. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Salmon is a much desired fish since it is high in Omega oils and nutrients.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The fish, especially the Chinook salmon, have large reserves of fat to make their long trip to the spawning grounds possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Gold was discovered in the Klondike area in 1896 and at that point people traveled quickly to try to take advantage of their possibilities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many prospectors from all areas would take trails through the mountains and then sail on the Yukon to the sites of the gold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\">Native Americans in the Yukon area<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">Many native American people live in the Yukon, both past and present. \u00a0Chief Isaac of Han, lived near near Dawson, around 1898. \u00a0Many native Americans in the Yukon area spoke the\u00a0Athabascan Languages and still do today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u00a0<a
