Old maps have interesting decorative borders. \u00a0Students can add decorative borders to a World Explorers\u00a0map! \u00a0Early maps can inspire in your classroom. \u00a0Students and teachers love our World Explorers\u00a0hands on activity map<\/a> because has the flavor of an old map. \u00a0The blank uncolored World Explorers map is printed on a parchment-like paper, has a decorative border, a MAP KEY, and the routes of the major explorers plotted on it so they can be easily outlined and labeled by students. \u00a0Students follow the routes of many famous explorers across a world map, from the early Vikings to the modern day polar explorers. \u00a0The reverse side of the map describes all of the routes shown on the map.<\/p>\n

\"WORLD<\/a><\/p>\n

One of the activities of this World Explorers map is to decorate, color in the border, fill in the compass roses (there are 3!) and make a map that has an aged look to it. \u00a0Kids love making a map look old, coloring in the decorative details. \u00a0 Each\u00a0student’s map is different– no two use color in the same way, and no two have the same touch!<\/p>\n

Early maps<\/h2>\n

In addition to the activities on theWorld Explorers map, we also included\u00a0a feature about EARLY MAPS<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0meant to introduce students to what kind of maps were known at different times, as an encouragement to research more about this topic.<\/p>\n

All of this reminds us that early maps had wonderful decorative borders. \u00a0Here are a few\u00a0examples that are notable in the history of cartography.<\/p>\n

One of the earliest maps from 1528 was designed by Piri Reis, \u00a0an Ottoman cartographer living in the area we now know as Turkey. \u00a0This fragment\u00a0is all that remains of his very early map of North America. \u00a0A very detailed border frames what was probably a very simple map that would not resemble what we know of North America today! \u00a0If you would like to learn more about this early Man of Maps, go here<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

\"Second_World_Map_of_Piri_Reis\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Abraham Ortelius was an early cartographer who made many beautiful maps that were very up to date for his age. \u00a0His early map of the World, shown below, features clouds as a border, \u00a0surrounding the interior oval-shaped map. \u00a0Very painterly! \u00a0Learn more about this map here<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Gerardus Mercator was a cartographer who based his maps on the information brought back to Europe by Spanish and Portuguese explorers. \u00a0He was the first person to use the word ATLAS to describe a collection of maps. \u00a0 Here you can see another detailed border from his World map, designed in 1639. \u00a0Like many maps of his time and before, the decorations often included illustrations of ships and even sea monsters! \u00a0See more of this \u00a0map-maker’s work\u00a0here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

USING WORLD EXPLORERS IN YOUR CLASSROOM<\/h3>\n

There is at least one grade in every school\u00a0in America\u00a0that studies World Exploration. \u00a0So when you work with our WORLD EXPLORER<\/a>S activities, you will see we combine history and world geography with decoration — this makes an appealing learning experience for students!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

One teacher said about our WORLD EXPLORERS\u00a0map: \u00a0“I found using the World Explorers map while studying European Explorers<\/a> to be extremely useful. It allowed the students to put into perspective the miles traveled and the lengths countries went to to add land to increase their power. I also loved the fact the students were labeling parts of the world they may have never heard of before.<\/em>”<\/p>\n
