Lighthouses are depended upon\u00a0by sailors — and loved by tourists for their often quaint and unusual shapes.<\/p>\n

Lighthouses are structures that project bright signal lights. \u00a0These unique buildings, which are often tower-like, have a sole purpose: \u00a0to protect sailers and their vessels. \u00a0Lighthouses have been built\u00a0since ancient times to provide illumination\u00a0to alert sailors\u00a0navigating in boats to avoid dangerous shorelines. \u00a0These treacherous areas might include rocks or reefs or shoals, or other geographic features dangerous to boats and ships as they move along a coastline or enter a harbor.<\/p>\n

The earliest lighthouses used mirrors to reflect light from fires that burned in a furnace. \u00a0 In the past, they required a “keeper” who would be sure the lights were maintained. \u00a0The keepers of the lighthouses would live in the structure, often a lonely and isolated job. \u00a0Today most lighthouses do not have a staff and are electronically run.<\/p>\n

This early lighthouse, an octagonal wooden\u00a0tower completed in 1698, was the first offshore lighthouse,\u00a0built to warn sailors of the dangerous Eddystone Rocks in the United Kingdom.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Lighthouses around the world have been\u00a0designed in all shapes and sizes, depending on location and the needs of the area where they were built. \u00a0 Some lighthouses are built on land, others sit directly in the water. \u00a0Not all lighthouses are in or around oceans and seas. \u00a0For instance, there are many lighthouse in the Great Lakes of the United States, all in fresh water.<\/p>\n
