This week we learned that a new species of Giant Tortoise was found on the island of Santa Cruz, in that cluster of islands known as the Galapagos.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/EWs-galpagos-map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15195\" src=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/EWs-galpagos-map-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"EW's galpagos map\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/EWs-galpagos-map-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/EWs-galpagos-map-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/EWs-galpagos-map-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/EWs-galpagos-map.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the past, it was thought there was only one species of Giant Tortoise,\u00a0<i>Chelonoidis porteri<\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i>on the island of Santa Cruz. \u00a0A\u00a0recently published report reveals evidence that, due to study of genetics and careful measurements, another species has been defined. \u00a0It is being called\u00a0<i>Chelonoidis\u00a0<\/i><i>donfaustoi. \u00a0<\/i>The tortoises look very similar, but there are differences.<\/p>\n<p>Only 250 of this newly identified species\u00a0seem to exist, all which were previously grouped with the original species. \u00a0So now the numbers for that original population have been reduced by that number of 250.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15197\" src=\"http:\/\/mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mapofthemonth.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/640px-Galapagos_giant_tortoise_Geochelone_elephantopus.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Photo of Galapagos Giant Tortoise: Matthew Field, <a class=\"external free\" href=\"http:\/\/www.photography.mattfield.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.photography.mattfield.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The article, which you can read in full <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0138779\">HERE<\/a>, includes this\u00a0in its conclusion:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The revised taxonomy reduces the range of C. porteri, with a population of several thousand individuals, to occupying only the western and southwestern parts of Santa Cruz Island. It also confines C. donfaustoi to the eastern part of Santa Cruz Island, with a much smaller population size estimated currently at ca. 250 individuals.<\/em><em><a id=\"article1.body1.sec5.p2\" class=\"link-target\" name=\"article1.body1.sec5.p2\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From a conservation standpoint, recognition of this new species will help promote efforts to protect and restore it, given that its low abundance, small geographic range, and reduced genetic diversity make it vulnerable.
